LM Studio 0.4.7 hides prompt template

LM Studio 0.4.7 still supports Prompt Template, but it now auto-configures the setting from model metadata and only surfaces the control when a model needs a manual override. If you want it visible all the time, LM Studio says to right-click the chat sidebar or edit the model’s defaults in My Models.

// ANALYSIS

This is a sensible simplification for most users, but it also turns a core formatting knob into a hidden power-user setting. That makes the feature feel like it disappeared even though it is still there.

  • The docs still list Prompt Template under Advanced and say LM Studio auto-fills it from the model file’s metadata.
  • For per-model overrides, the path is My Models > gear icon; the chat sidebar only surfaces the box when a model lacks template metadata.
  • Right-clicking the sidebar and choosing Always Show Prompt Template restores the always-visible behavior people may remember.
  • Jinja and manual templates are still supported, which matters for older or custom models that do not ship clean prompt metadata.
  • If a model’s chat format, tool calls, or EOS handling looks wrong, this is still one of the first places to check.
