Deno Joins Cloudflare, Runtime Winds Down
The Deno team is joining Cloudflare to merge celld with workerd and make Workers and Durable Objects easier to self-host. Deno will receive one year of maintenance, while Deno Deploy shuts down after six months; JSR continues under Cloudflare.
This is less a conventional acquisition than a strategic absorption of Deno’s infrastructure expertise into Cloudflare’s serverless platform.
- –Merging celld and workerd could make Cloudflare’s programming model portable across self-hosted infrastructure.
- –Deno users face a sharp transition: runtime development ends after one year, and Deploy customers must migrate to Workers.
- –JSR survives, but moving its infrastructure to Cloudflare deepens the ecosystem’s dependence on its new owner.
- –Durable Objects’ state, WebSockets, and serverless execution are especially compelling primitives for large-scale AI agent workloads.
- –Deno remains open source, but its long-term future now depends on community maintainers or a successful fork.
