Pi 1.0 ships with Durable agents
Pi 1.0 is a hardened, MIT-licensed, extensible terminal agent used by hundreds of thousands weekly, adding codemode, MCP, virtual models, deferred tool loading, cache warming, transcript-aware prompts, and a fullscreen TUI. Earendil also ships Pi Durable, an experimental runtime for resumable, long-running, multi-client agents.
The important move is the architectural split: Pi stays minimal for interactive coding, while Pi Durable tackles the harder runtime problems behind persistent agents.
- –Pi 1.0 adds meaningful capabilities without turning the core CLI into an everything-platform.
- –Pi Durable checkpoints tasks, resumes after crashes, supports concurrent conversations, and preserves history through background compaction.
- –SQLite, JSONL, and memory storage make the runtime portable across local machines, Bun, Cloudflare Durable Objects, and custom backends.
- –Forkable conversations, shared steering, and durable application state make Pi a plausible foundation for Slack bots, GitHub triage, and other agentic services.
- –The experimental label matters: replaying model calls is manageable, but safely repeating real-world side effects remains the production-grade challenge.
