OpenAI restores five-hour Codex, Work limits
OpenAI is reinstating five-hour usage limits for Codex and ChatGPT Work on ChatGPT Plus starting August 25, after temporarily leaving subscribers with only a weekly cap. Users who hit either limit must wait for a reset or purchase additional credits.
This restores predictability for capacity management but makes Plus less reliable for developers running long, agentic coding sessions.
- –Codex and Work share the same agentic usage pool, so switching between them will not bypass the cap
- –Long-running tasks can be interrupted even when a user still has weekly capacity remaining
- –Paid credits turn a fixed subscription into a partially usage-based model
- –Reversing the temporary limit removal risks eroding trust among developers planning workflows around Plus
