Hermes Agent makes old PCs useful again
Nous Research is urging developers to install Hermes Agent on spare hardware, positioning its open-source runtime as a persistent agent with memory, skills, tools, messaging integrations, and scheduling. A recent NVIDIA demo showed Hermes coordinating a robotics simulation-to-real workflow across local and cloud compute.
Hermes is more compelling as a durable agent runtime than as another chatbot, but “old machine” mainly means the controller—not necessarily the hardware running every model or workload.
- –MIT-licensed and self-hosted, Hermes combines persistent memory, self-written skills, tool use, plugins, and multi-channel access.
- –It supports hosted providers and local endpoints, so an aging computer can orchestrate work while heavier inference runs elsewhere.
- –NVIDIA’s GTC demo showed Hermes coordinating CAD, simulation, reinforcement learning, and robot evaluation across multiple tools.
- –Developers should start with a basic chat, then add gateways, cron jobs, browser access, and plugins incrementally.
- –Terminal access, credentials, persistent memory, and messaging integrations make sandboxing, approvals, and backups essential.
