Vercel Makes Plain Dockerfiles Deployable
Vercel now auto-detects a root Dockerfile or Containerfile when no other framework matches, selects the Container preset, builds the image, and routes traffic to it. The beta runtime brings arbitrary HTTP services into Vercel’s preview, autoscaling, and Active CPU workflow.
This removes much of the friction for deploying non-framework backends on Vercel, though it remains a stateless HTTP runtime rather than a general-purpose container platform.
- –Root Dockerfile and Containerfile support makes deployment nearly zero-configuration
- –Developers retain Git-based previews, routing, logs, autoscaling, and Vercel’s operational workflow
- –Go, Rust, Python, Ruby, FFmpeg, and Chromium workloads become more practical on Vercel
- –Containers must serve HTTP and keep persistent state in external services
- –The beta runtime strengthens Vercel’s backend and infrastructure story beyond frontend hosting
