Claude Platform Adds Native OpenTelemetry Tracing
Claude Platform now supports OpenTelemetry observability for Claude SDK workflows, allowing developers to configure an OTLP destination and capture traces for agent turns and tool calls with minimal setup. Anthropic’s cookbook demonstrates the environment-variable-based configuration.
This is unglamorous but important production infrastructure: portable tracing makes Claude agents easier to debug, optimize, and govern inside existing observability stacks.
- –Native OTLP support reduces custom middleware and keeps telemetry compatible with tools such as Grafana, Datadog, Honeycomb, and self-hosted collectors.
- –Turn- and tool-level spans expose latency, failures, retries, and agent fan-out more clearly than raw API logs.
- –Teams should configure redaction and retention carefully because prompts, responses, tool parameters, and user identifiers may enter telemetry.
- –Developers should verify coverage across the Messages API, Claude Agent SDK, and hand-rolled agent loops before assuming complete end-to-end tracing.
