Gallup Gen Z AI Sentiment Sours
Gallup, the Walton Family Foundation, and GSV Ventures find that Gen Z’s AI use has largely plateaued even as excitement and hopefulness keep falling. The 1,572-person survey suggests young users increasingly see AI as a learning drag and workplace risk rather than an obvious productivity win.
// ANALYSIS
The real story isn’t that Gen Z uses less AI; it’s that more exposure is making the tradeoffs harder to ignore. The industry has spent two years selling inevitability, but this report shows that mandate-driven adoption can backfire when the day-to-day value still feels thin.
- –Use is flat: just over half of Gen Z says they use AI daily or weekly, which means the hype curve has not translated into deeper habitual adoption.
- –Sentiment is moving the wrong way: excitement and hope are down, anger is up, and even frequent users are less positive than they were a year ago.
- –The biggest friction points are familiar AI weaknesses: hallucinations, weak trust, and the sense that AI shortcuts may undermine learning and critical thinking.
- –In schools and workplaces, forced integration appears to be creating more resentment than enthusiasm, especially when institutions adopt AI before proving clear benefits.
- –For builders, the takeaway is straightforward: products that can show accuracy, transparency, and real skill amplification will earn trust faster than generic “AI everywhere” features.
