OpenBSD 8.0 Brings Linux 6.18 Drivers
OpenBSD 8.0’s release notes list DRM updated to Linux 6.18.53, Intel Arc A-Series support in inteldrm(4), and expanded amd64 address space for GPUs with more than 4GB of VRAM. The update strengthens OpenBSD’s modern Intel and AMD graphics support.
This is unglamorous but important workstation plumbing: OpenBSD’s hardware compatibility increasingly depends on keeping its Linux-derived DRM stack current. The milestone is meaningful, though much of the underlying 6.18 work was already present in 7.9 snapshots.
- –Intel Arc A-Series support is the headline improvement for newer desktop GPUs.
- –Updated amdgpu and radeondrm code should improve compatibility across AMD Radeon generations.
- –More kernel address space removes a practical limitation for GPUs with large VRAM pools.
- –The work shows how upstream Linux driver development benefits non-Linux operating systems.
- –It remains graphics infrastructure, not a new rendering API or a replacement for Mesa userspace support.
