OpenBot launches local AI teammate workspace
Norbert Bodziony’s OpenBot is a local-first desktop workspace where persistent AI agents keep context, share files, hand off tasks, and collaborate with humans. It connects to Codex, Claude Code, Gemini, Grok, OpenCode, Cursor, Cline, and local models, while remaining a free development preview.
OpenBot’s compelling idea is treating agents as persistent workers rather than disposable chat sessions, but its security and licensing boundaries will determine whether teams can adopt it seriously.
- –Named agents, durable workspaces, queues, shared files, and agent-to-agent handoffs make multi-agent workflows more practical than juggling separate CLI windows.
- –Provider flexibility lets developers reuse existing AI subscriptions and switch models without abandoning an agent’s workspace or history.
- –Local-first storage improves control, but prompts still reach the selected provider and agents can access files, run commands, browse the web, and use plugins.
- –An independent review reported that workspace-only process confinement works on macOS but falls back to unconfined execution on Windows and Linux, making the development-preview warning significant. [Review](https://indie-machine.com/posts/openbot-multi-agent-workspace-review-confinement-gap)
- –The current PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license makes OpenBot source-available for noncommercial use; commercial deployment requires a separate license. [Repository](https://github.com/nightly-labs/openbot)
