Codex Cloud quietly adds Tailscale support
OpenAI’s revamped Codex Cloud runs coding tasks in reusable, OpenAI-managed environments that remain active while developers’ computers sleep. Its newly surfaced Tailscale integration lets cloud agents reach internal HTTP and HTTPS services over a tailnet.
The meaningful upgrade is networking: Codex Cloud moves from isolated remote execution toward a practical engineering environment, but giving an agent tailnet access raises the stakes for access control.
- –Reusable environments reduce setup friction and make long-running, asynchronous coding tasks more viable.
- –Tailscale support gives Codex access to internal APIs, testing services, and private resources without a bespoke integration.
- –Ephemeral, tagged auth keys and narrowly scoped grants should be mandatory; default tailnet access is too broad for an autonomous coding agent.
- –The integration is useful but limited: no SSH, UDP, ICMP, inbound connections, MagicDNS, or split DNS.
- –Availability is still rolling out to eligible paid ChatGPT plans, making this a strong infrastructure step with an incomplete distribution story.
