RuView Brings Camera-Free Sensing to ESP32
Better Stack tests RuView with three ESP32-S3 boards and a locally trained movement classifier to detect presence and activity from Wi-Fi Channel State Information. The open-source platform processes sensing locally, without cameras or cloud services.
RuView is a compelling developer prototype, but its practical value currently depends more on careful calibration and multi-node setup than on plug-and-play “Wi-Fi vision.”
- –CSI capture requires dedicated ESP32 hardware; ordinary laptops generally provide only coarse RSSI-based sensing.
- –Local processing offers a meaningful privacy advantage for occupancy, motion, and ambient monitoring.
- –The repository labels breathing and heart-rate estimates experimental, while live 17-keypoint pose remains unvalidated.
- –Three-board deployments make the system testable, but environmental changes and RF interference can produce false positives.
- –The project is most promising as an open platform for research and custom edge sensing, not yet as a medical or security-grade replacement for cameras.
