UB Mode Puts Quality Gates on Coding Agents
UB Mode is an open-source agent skill from Uncle Bob that combines TDD, clean-code principles, complexity and duplication thresholds, and mutation testing. It gives coding agents measurable checks for whether their tests actually catch defects.
UB Mode’s strongest idea is turning “write clean code” from agent-friendly advice into failing quality gates, though its checklist and companion-tool setup still require careful human oversight.
- –Enforces test-first development, behavior-focused tests, root-cause fixes, and incremental refactoring
- –Uses CRAP scores to constrain complexity relative to test coverage
- –Detects structural duplication and requires mutation testing to eliminate uncovered or surviving mutants
- –Mutation testing is more meaningful than coverage alone because it tests whether assertions catch realistic code changes
- –The skill is not self-contained: teams must install separate tools, validate the metrics, and review risky defaults such as pushing directly to the main branch
