Android NDK Bug Exposes AOSP Source Lag
A regression in Android 17’s bionic libc makes `wcscspn()` and `wcspbrk()` mishandle every non-ASCII character on September Pixel builds. With matching AOSP sources unavailable, developers had to disassemble `libc.so` to identify the faulty branch and report the bug.
This is the uncomfortable cost of treating “open source” as a delayed snapshot: developers can reproduce failures, but cannot inspect the code actually running on devices.
- –The bug breaks native software processing emoji, CJK, Cyrillic, Greek, and other non-ASCII text.
- –Public June AOSP sources contain a correct implementation, while September production binaries contain different code.
- –ASCII-only tests failed to catch the regression, exposing a gap in bionic’s test coverage.
- –Visual Pinball’s Wine-based runtime already required a downstream workaround.
- –Google acknowledged the issue and plans missing tests plus a backport, but delayed source access makes independent debugging harder.
