Discuria launches paper search, discussion hub
Discuria is a free platform for searching, reading, annotating, and discussing academic papers, with coverage across arXiv, Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, CrossRef, and PubMed. It adds inline annotations, threaded discussions, a Claude-powered assistant, upload-and-share support, and read-aloud playback for paper reading workflows.
// ANALYSIS
This feels less like a simple paper search clone and more like an attempt to build the missing social layer for research reading. The big question is whether it can get enough active users to make the discussion and annotation features actually useful.
- –Broader indexing is a smart wedge: it is not limited to arXiv, so the product can serve ML, biology, physics, and adjacent research communities.
- –Inline annotations plus threaded comments are the real differentiator; that turns papers into a shared workspace instead of a solo reading task.
- –The Claude assistant and read-aloud mode make dense papers easier to digest, which should help adoption among skimmers and students.
- –Free access lowers friction, but the hardest problem is still network effects: paper discussion tools only get better when enough people use the same papers.
- –The product sits in a crowded AI-reading-assistant space, so long-term retention will probably depend on community quality more than feature count.
