Etched Sohu Secures $1B in Orders
AI hardware startup Etched has secured over $1 billion in orders for its specialized chip, Sohu, which is custom-designed exclusively for transformer-based model inference. By hard-coding the transformer architecture directly into its silicon, Sohu bypasses the memory and compute bottlenecks of general-purpose GPUs to deliver up to 10x the throughput and speed of current state-of-the-art inference hardware.
Bet-the-company hardware specialization is the only way to beat Nvidia, but it leaves Etched vulnerable to future architectural shifts in AI.
* Hard-coding transformers into silicon yields massive efficiency and performance gains that general-purpose architectures cannot achieve.
* This hyper-specialization creates a high-stakes vulnerability if the AI industry transitions to non-transformer architectures (like Mamba or SSMs).
* Reaching $1 billion in bookings demonstrates intense enterprise demand for cheaper, faster, and more scalable inference alternatives.
