OpenAI Realtime demo lets AIs talk
Reddit user wired two OpenAI Realtime voice sessions together over WebRTC, one on a laptop and one on a phone, and kicked off a conversation with a simple hello. For nine minutes the agents stayed in a polite loop, then one drifted into explaining AI concepts to the other.
// ANALYSIS
This is a sharp demo of how natural voice agents have gotten, and how little built-in meta-awareness they have about who is on the other end.
- –Each session appears isolated, so neither agent is automatically told it is speaking to another AI; any self-recognition would have to be explicitly prompted or orchestrated.
- –The repeated "what would you like to explore next?" pattern shows how default assistant behavior can keep a conversation moving even when it lacks a real task.
- –The 5:38 pivot into neural networks and intelligence reads more like conversational drift than true detection, which is exactly what makes the clip interesting.
- –For builders, the takeaway is that identity, context, and guardrails matter as much as latency if you want agents to know what kind of conversation they are in.
