agent-html-kit Matches Markdown Token Costs
agent-html-kit is an open-source Claude Code skill and reusable HTML component kit that lets coding agents generate interactive reports, diagrams, and boards by writing content instead of repeatedly generating CSS, SVG, and JavaScript. Its 72-run benchmark found kit-based HTML used roughly the same output tokens as Markdown.
The compelling idea is not that HTML replaces Markdown, but that reusable rendering primitives make rich agent output economically viable.
- –The kit reduced a weekly report from 7,204 freeform HTML tokens to 726, versus 883 for Markdown.
- –Architecture diagrams and drag-and-drop boards gained interactivity without paying freeform HTML’s large generation overhead.
- –A second agent implemented plans successfully across all formats, though freeform HTML consumed substantially more context and cost.
- –The approach works best for recurring document types; unsupported layouts still incur the full cost of custom HTML.
- –The benchmark is directional, using one model, three runs per cell, and a deliberately polished freeform HTML baseline.
