LookAhead Defense Counters Dormant Agent Poisoning
A new paper shows that benign fine-tuning can activate hidden harmful behaviors in language and multimodal agents, including unseen actions. LookAhead Defense uses a Safety Buffer to preview updates and penalize those that degrade safety while preserving utility. [Paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.24379v1)
The unsettling takeaway is that a model’s safety at release says little about how it will behave after downstream customization.
- –Demonstrates dormant poisoning across language models, agents, and multimodal systems
- –Reports harmful agent behavior falling from up to 93.9% to at most 14.2%
- –Uses the released model’s own safe responses as a reference, reducing reliance on trusted clean models
- –Penalizes safety-degrading updates selectively to limit over-refusal
- –Makes fine-tuning-time safety evaluation a production requirement, not an optional red-team exercise
