Super ZSNES revives SNES emulation, GPU-style
The original ZSNES developers are back with Super ZSNES, a from-scratch SNES emulator that pushes graphics work onto the GPU and adds per-game visual enhancements. It ships early with Windows, Mac, Android support, while iOS and tougher compatibility features are still on the roadmap.
The big bet here is that retro emulation can still differentiate on presentation through the Super Enhancement Engine, which adds higher-res visuals, texture and normal maps, widescreen tweaks, audio replacement, and per-game overclocking. The risk is that compatibility is still thin, with special chips like DSP1 and SuperFX not implemented yet and netplay still missing. The nostalgia cues and paid Android app suggest the team is already thinking about fans and distribution, but the real test is whether the GPU-first architecture improves fidelity without breaking timing.
