Claude Platform WIF Replaces Static API Keys
Anthropic’s Claude Platform documents Workload Identity Federation (WIF), replacing long-lived API keys with short-lived, scoped tokens exchanged from existing OIDC identities. It supports AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Okta, and other compliant providers.
WIF is the right production default for teams tired of distributing and rotating Claude credentials, though it shifts security responsibility to the upstream identity provider.
- –Service accounts and federation rules provide workload-level attribution, least-privilege scopes, and audit trails
- –SDKs, Claude Code, the Admin API, and GitHub Actions support keyless authentication workflows
- –Existing API keys can coexist during migration, enabling teams to move workloads incrementally
- –`ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` takes precedence over federation, so leftover environment variables can silently disable WIF
- –Short-lived tokens reduce secret exposure but do not compensate for weak OIDC issuer or workload policies
