OpenAI Decisions API Goes Live
OpenAI’s Decisions API is now live, turning text or image context into bounded answers for classification, request routing, and choosing an agent’s next action. Its API reference supports predicate, choice, and score questions for direct use in application logic.
OpenAI is packaging the most useful slice of an LLM call—the decision—as a dedicated control-plane primitive. That could make agent systems faster and less brittle, but confidence scores still require calibration and explicit fallbacks.
- –Finite answers reduce fragile free-form parsing and simplify application branching
- –Multimodal inputs open routing, moderation, triage, and UI-control workflows beyond text classification
- –Agents can delegate bounded next-step choices without invoking a full general-purpose generation call
- –Developers still need evaluations, thresholds, abstention paths, and human review for high-impact decisions
- –Pricing, limits, and real-world accuracy will determine whether this replaces custom classifiers or simply complements them
