Vercel CI Goes Project-Free on GitHub
Vercel CI can now run on private GitHub repositories without creating or linking a Vercel project: install the GitHub App, connect your account, and run vercel ci enable. Public repositories and other Git providers remain unsupported.
This is a small onboarding fix with bigger strategic weight: Vercel is positioning CI as standalone infrastructure for agent-generated pull requests, not merely a feature attached to its hosting platform. Vercel’s announcement.
- –Removes the awkward requirement to create empty placeholder projects.
- –Vercel CI’s real advantage is affected-task selection, Turborepo dependency graphs, and Remote Cache—not simply easier setup.
- –GitHub-only and private-repository-only support limits adoption compared with GitHub Actions.
- –Teams outside the Turborepo ecosystem still need to add turbo.json and the Turborepo package to get the full workflow.
