PicoMQ launches durable streams on object storage
PicoMQ is an Apache-2.0 Rust server for URL-addressable, real-time streams over HTTP, backed by S3-compatible object storage. It supports append, replay, long-polling, and SSE through the Pico Protocol or Durable Streams Protocol, with Postgres coordinating stream commands.
PicoMQ targets a useful gap between fragile WebSocket plumbing and heavyweight Kafka deployments, especially for resumable AI-agent sessions and event streams.
- –HTTP-native streams simplify browser, mobile, and edge-client integration while preserving replay and reconnect semantics
- –Per-use-case streams avoid forcing unrelated records into shared topics, making stream ownership and lifecycle easier to reason about
- –S3-backed durability promises low-cost retention and elastic capacity, but object-store request costs, latency, batching, and consistency need careful tuning
- –Postgres keeps coordination familiar, though its command log could become a scaling or availability dependency at very high stream counts
- –Reusing S3Stream from AutoMQ gives the project a credible storage foundation, but production readiness will depend on benchmarks, authentication, observability, and operational tooling
