UK government drops Palantir for open source
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has terminated its contract with Palantir for the "Homes for Ukraine" data system. The department is transitioning to an in-house model built on open-source code to reduce costs and regain sovereign control over its digital infrastructure.
Scrapping proprietary data platforms for in-house open-source solutions signals a major shift toward sovereign technology within the UK civil service. Moving away from Palantir eliminates vendor lock-in and is projected to save the department millions of pounds in annual running costs. The shift addresses long-standing usability issues and data integrity failures previously flagged by the National Audit Office. Palantir's brand has become increasingly toxic in the UK following "unlimited access" data scandals in the NHS, making this a strategic PR exit. Prioritizing in-house development allows for better alignment with GDS standards and user-centric design than "urgent exemption" private contracts.
