Mac.apk Goes Open Source, Runs Android Natively
Mac.apk is an AGPL-3.0 compatibility layer that runs Android APKs as native-looking macOS apps on Apple Silicon—without an emulator, virtual machine, or Linux guest. It remains an alpha, requiring macOS 26.4 or later, with 51 of 65 tested apps reportedly working.
This is a genuinely ambitious systems project, but “native” does not mean drop-in Android compatibility: Mac.apk replaces the Android runtime stack while inheriting the ecosystem’s Play Services and device-attestation problems.
- –The open-source drop includes the Android framework reimplementation, native runtime, ARM loader, Bionic shim, ARM32 recompiler, and macOS launcher.
- –Standard APK support could help developers test Android builds and give Mac users access to apps that lack macOS versions.
- –Google Play Services, SafetyNet, advertising SDKs, and in-app purchases remain significant compatibility gaps.
- –APKs run with the macOS user’s permissions rather than a phone-style sandbox, making trusted software sources essential.
- –AGPL licensing encourages community fixes while leaving commercial distribution open to separate licensing.
