DuckDB previews v2.0 with server, async I/O
DuckDB v2.0, codenamed Cyanoptera, is planned for fall 2026 with a client/server mode, first-class VARIANT data, triggers, asynchronous I/O, a new SQL parser, and a new storage format. The release represents a major shift from embedded analytics toward long-running, networked deployments.
DuckDB v2.0 looks less like a routine version bump and more like an expansion of DuckDB’s ambition from “SQLite for analytics” into a flexible analytical database platform.
- –Quack and CONNECT add native remote execution while preserving DuckDB’s embedded workflow
- –VARIANT, Parquet shredding, and JSON improvements make evolving event and log data cheaper to query
- –Asynchronous object-store I/O should deliver the biggest gains for S3-backed lakehouse workloads
- –The new storage format, lazy metadata, and buffer-managed indexes target faster startup and lower memory use
- –A stable C API could make extensions far easier to maintain across future DuckDB releases
