Off Grid previews LAN LLM routing

Off Grid is building automatic discovery of nearby LLM servers so a phone can find models running on a laptop, desktop, or home server over local Wi‑Fi and route inference there instead of running everything on-device. It extends the project’s existing offline AI stack—text, vision, image generation, speech, and tool use—into a shared local compute model without falling back to the cloud.

// ANALYSIS

This is the most practical direction for “local AI on mobile” right now: keep the privacy and offline-first ethos, but stop pretending every serious workload belongs on the phone itself.

  • Auto-discovering LAN inference servers could make phones a front end for stronger local hardware, which is a cleaner answer than forcing every model onto limited mobile RAM
  • The idea bridges mobile AI apps with the broader local-LLM stack around home servers, laptops, and Wi‑Fi-connected desktops
  • If Off Grid adds smart routing and shared context across devices, it starts looking less like a chat app and more like a personal edge inference layer
  • The hard part will be reliability and trust: device discovery, auth, model compatibility, and network handoff are much messier than a single-device offline demo
  • This is still a preview rather than a shipped release, but it points to a compelling middle ground between pure on-device AI and cloud APIs
