NVIDIA Vera Lands Modal Sandbox Workloads
Modal plans to move its AI-agent Sandboxes toward NVIDIA Vera after early testing showed up to 2x higher throughput than an equivalent x86 server under concurrent load. The Arm-based CPU could improve container packing and reduce contention, though the results are based on Modal’s own benchmark.
This is strategically bigger than one benchmark: NVIDIA is targeting the CPU bottleneck between model calls, tool use, and code execution—not just GPU acceleration.
- –Vera’s advantage appeared under heavy multi-tenant contention, where Modal says competing CPUs reached throughput plateaus.
- –Modal must adapt its infrastructure and image-build system to support Arm, making this a meaningful architectural shift from x86.
- –The benchmark covers agent workloads such as compilation, file search, Git operations, and device emulation.
- –Developers could eventually get higher concurrent Sandbox throughput without changing Modal’s API.
- –Independent testing and real production economics are still needed before Vera’s claimed advantage becomes broadly credible.
