Mastercard Opens Agent Pay Early Access
Mastercard opened early access to buyer- and seller-side APIs, a toolkit, sandbox, and documentation for Agent Pay for Machines after pilots with Coinbase, Base, Cloudflare, and others. The system uses x402 payment challenges and signed vouchers so agents can purchase digital services within human-approved budgets.
This is less Skynet than a billing primitive, but agents cannot become useful economic actors without discovering and paying for services autonomously. Mastercard has moved the concept from keynote vision to testable infrastructure, though the pilot remains far from a production marketplace.
- –x402’s HTTP 402 flow could eliminate bespoke accounts, API keys, checkouts, and invoices for agent-purchased services.
- –Spending limits and signed vouchers address the harder problem: controlling what an agent is authorized to buy.
- –The stack is highly interconnected, combining Coinbase wallets, Base settlement, BVNK payment rails, and Mastercard’s trust layer.
- –A demo covering nine payments across two merchants proves the workflow, not its scalability, pricing, or commercial readiness.
- –Developers can now test the buyer and seller sides, but Mastercard has not announced general availability.
