MLX-Tune brings Unsloth-style LLM tuning to Mac
MLX-Tune is a new open-source Python library for native Apple Silicon LLM fine-tuning on MLX, covering SFT plus preference trainers like DPO/ORPO/GRPO/KTO/SimPO and VLM SFT. It mirrors the Unsloth/TRL API so teams can prototype locally on Mac, then move nearly the same training code to CUDA workflows.
This is a practical bridge project, not a benchmark flex: it lowers the cost of iteration for Mac-based ML developers while keeping a path to NVIDIA production stacks.
- –The import-compatible API is the key bet, because it reduces rewrite friction between local prototyping and cloud training.
- –Support for both text and vision fine-tuning (including Qwen3.5 VLM workflows) makes it more than a narrow SFT wrapper.
- –LoRA/QLoRA plus GGUF export targets real downstream usage, though quantized-to-GGUF export still depends on upstream mlx-lm limitations.
- –Positioning it explicitly as “not a Unsloth replacement” is credible and helps set correct expectations on speed and scale.
