OpenAI Flex Occasionally Outruns Standard
New Artificial Analysis measurements show OpenAI’s discounted Flex tier can occasionally respond faster than Standard, despite being designed for slower, lower-priority workloads. The result highlights how variable inference capacity can overturn tier expectations on individual requests.
Flex is still a latency tradeoff overall, but these measurements show that “lower priority” does not mean slower on every call.
- –Flex performance depends heavily on model, traffic, prompt size, and output length
- –Occasional wins do not erase higher variance, limited availability, or potential 429 errors
- –Developers should compare p50 and tail latency rather than relying on a single benchmark run
- –Flex looks especially attractive for evaluations, enrichment, and retry-tolerant background workloads
- –Production systems can route to Flex first, then explicitly fall back to Standard when latency matters
