CAISI Gates Frontier Model Releases
NIST’s CAISI signed new agreements with Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI to evaluate frontier models before public release. It is another sign that security review is becoming part of the model shipping pipeline.
// ANALYSIS
This is a meaningful shift: pre-release model review is moving from ad hoc cooperation to a standing government process. For frontier labs, security evals are no longer just a trust-and-safety add-on; they are becoming part of launch infrastructure.
- –CAISI can now inspect models before public release, which raises the compliance bar for frontier launches
- –The deals extend an existing pattern with OpenAI and Anthropic, so this looks like a broader federal testing regime, not a one-off
- –Labs will likely need cleaner eval harnesses, safer release pipelines, and versions with safeguards stripped back for government probing
- –The upside is earlier detection of cyber and misuse risk; the tradeoff is slower iteration and tighter regulatory coupling around model access
