Open Inspector Launches Private Design Inspection
Open Inspector is a free, MIT-licensed Chrome extension that reveals a webpage’s layout, styles, colors, typography, assets, and design tokens without host permissions or network requests. It exports findings as CSS variables, Tailwind configuration, W3C tokens, or markdown handoffs.
Open Inspector’s strongest feature is its trust boundary: developers can inspect staging sites and internal dashboards without handing an extension broad access to every page.
- –Extracts matched CSS, spacing scales, rendered fonts, breakpoints, assets, markup, and WCAG contrast results
- –Exports implementation-ready formats including CSS, SCSS, Tailwind, JSON, W3C tokens, and markdown
- –Uses click-scoped activeTab access instead of persistent site permissions, with no telemetry, accounts, or license checks
- –Live editing, state forcing, element hiding, and breakpoint resizing make it more useful than a static inspector
- –Honest limitations around cross-origin stylesheets, canvas, closed shadow roots, and bulk asset downloads improve credibility
