Gemini in Drive adds AI Overviews, Q&A
Google is rolling out AI Overviews in Drive search and a new Ask Gemini experience that can answer questions across documents, emails, calendar events, and the web. The update turns Drive into a more active research layer, with cited answers pulled from users’ own files.
Google is effectively turning Drive into a native RAG surface for Workspace, which is a bigger product shift than it first looks.
- –AI Overviews bring cited summaries directly into Drive search, so users can get answers without opening every file.
- –Cross-file Q&A across Drive, Gmail, Calendar, and the web makes the assistant useful for synthesis, not just lookup.
- –The rollout is gated to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, and Drive access is currently U.S.-only, so this is powerful but not yet universal.
- –For teams living in Workspace, this narrows the gap between “stored content” and “actionable knowledge,” which is exactly where a lot of AI value is moving.
