OpenTitan ships in production Chromebooks
Google says OpenTitan, the open source silicon root of trust project stewarded with lowRISC, is now shipping in commercially available Chromebooks via a Nuvoton-produced part. That turns a long-running open hardware security effort into real production silicon, with Google datacenter deployment and a second-generation post-quantum roadmap already underway.
// ANALYSIS
OpenTitan crossing from GitHub credibility to shipped hardware is the real story here — open silicon is no longer just a research flex, it is entering mainstream platform security.
- –The milestone matters because root-of-trust chips sit underneath everything else in the security stack, so production adoption is a much higher bar than a normal open-source release
- –Google says this first commercially available open-source RoT already supports post-quantum secure boot with SLH-DSA, which gives the project a surprisingly forward-looking security posture
- –Nuvoton producing the first part shows the open model can support real commercial supply chains instead of staying trapped inside one vendor
- –The project’s 40k+ nightly tests, 90%+ coverage figures, and independent lowRISC stewardship are a direct answer to the usual “open hardware can’t meet production quality” critique
- –Reuse of OpenTitan IP in Caliptra suggests the bigger win may be an emerging ecosystem for open security silicon beyond Chromebooks
