Google turns Search into agentic AI workspace
Google announced a major overhaul of Search at I/O 2026, replacing the old keyword-first flow with an AI-powered search box, deeper conversational AI Mode, and a new default Gemini 3.5 Flash model. The update adds search agents that monitor the web for you, agentic booking and calling actions, generative UI that can produce interactive layouts on the fly, and expanded Personal Intelligence that can connect with Gmail, Google Photos, and soon Calendar.
Hot take: this is Google admitting that search is no longer mainly about returning links; it’s about doing work, synthesizing context, and taking actions.
- –The “intelligent” search box is the clearest signal that classic query-and-click UX is being replaced by conversational, multimodal input.
- –Search agents make the product feel more like an ambient assistant than a lookup engine, especially for tracking changes over time.
- –Generative UI and mini-app-like dashboards could be genuinely useful, but they also push publishers and traditional SEO further down the stack.
- –The rollout scope is aggressive: some features start today, others land this summer, and Personal Intelligence is expanding broadly without a subscription.
