Flint drops 40B open coding model
Recursive released Flint, a 39.8B-parameter mixture-of-experts coding model with roughly 2.5B active parameters per token, a 262K context window, and Apache 2.0 open weights. It is designed for local coding agents with reasoning and multi-turn tool use.
Flint’s strongest pitch is efficiency: a frontier-sized coding model that developers can actually self-host and modify.
- –Sparse activation keeps inference practical despite 39.8B total parameters
- –Apache 2.0 licensing enables commercial deployment, fine-tuning, and redistribution
- –Long context and tool use target real repository work rather than chat demos
- –Recursive says its automated Eureka Machine helped build the model in under four months
- –Benchmark results are publisher-reported, so developers should validate performance on their own hardware and agent stack
