Battlefield 1942 Runs in Browser via Claude
Pieter Levels says Claude Code decompiled Battlefield 1942’s raw C engine and got the 2002 shooter running in a browser. The demo shows a playable first-person scene and map loading, but remains an early proof of concept.
The breakthrough is less about reviving one game than showing AI-assisted reverse engineering can push legacy C engines toward WebAssembly.
- –Browser deployment could dramatically lower the barrier to preservation, modding, and experimentation.
- –A playable demo does not prove complete decompilation, networking, performance, or gameplay fidelity.
- –Claude Code accelerates reverse engineering, but binary validation, testing, and platform integration still require serious engineering.
- –Requiring users to provide their own game files may help avoid distributing copyrighted assets, though legal questions remain.
