Reelbird Launches Open-Source Loom Alternative
Reelbird is a free, MIT-licensed macOS screen recorder that copies a shareable link when recording stops, then lets users polish the same video with auto-zoom, smooth cursor effects, captions, and audio edits. It runs natively in Swift, requires no account, and stores shared videos in the user’s own S3-compatible bucket.
Reelbird’s strongest idea is separating instant sharing from post-recording polish, giving creators Loom’s speed without surrendering storage or ownership.
- –Same-link updates make it practical to share rough recordings immediately, then improve them later without replacing the URL
- –Native Swift, ScreenCaptureKit, and Metal should keep the app lightweight compared with Electron-based alternatives
- –BYO S3/R2 storage improves privacy and cost control, but adds setup friction for nontechnical users
- –Crash-safe segmented recording and separate audio tracks are thoughtful details for reliable demos and tutorials
- –Its CLI and MCP server make it unusually relevant to AI coding workflows that need to generate or document product demos
