Norway Should Own OpenAI Stake

The proposal is provocative but strategically coherent: Norway already understands how to convert finite resource wealth into long-term national capital, while OpenAI represents a far riskier digital equivalent.

• –A sovereign stake could give Norwegian citizens exposure to AI-generated wealth without requiring the state to operate an AI lab.
• –OpenAI’s private status, extreme valuation, capital needs, and uncertain governance make the investment substantially riskier than Norway’s diversified public-equity strategy.
• –Public ownership could strengthen leverage over data governance, compute access, safety standards, and national AI infrastructure.
• –Norway’s existing role in OpenAI’s Stargate Norway plans makes the idea more than abstract financial speculation; infrastructure and equity could reinforce each other.
• –The biggest danger is concentration: buying one frontier lab could undermine the diversification principles that made Norway’s fund successful.
