Walmart Opens Agent Gateway for AI Shoppers
Walmart is launching the [Walmart Agent Gateway](https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2026/10/Making-It-Possible-for-Agents-to-Shop-on-Behalf-of-Customers), an MCP-based connection allowing approved AI assistants to search Walmart and Sam’s Club inventory and complete purchases. Agent Profiles will add per-agent approvals, spending caps, separate order histories, and revocation controls next month.
Walmart is turning agentic commerce into a governed platform surface while Amazon protects its closed shopping funnel. The strategy is promising, but trust, attribution, and reliable product data will decide whether agents become useful shoppers or expensive middlemen.
- –MCP gives agent builders a sanctioned integration path instead of fragile browser automation.
- –Spending limits, transaction approvals, limited data access, and revocation address the biggest consumer risks.
- –Walmart gains a shot at owning agent-driven commerce before outside assistants become the default discovery layer.
- –Developers will need structured, current inventory and pricing data for agents to make dependable recommendations.
- –Adoption remains uncertain: only 16% of shoppers currently feel comfortable letting AI purchase on their behalf, according to [Axios](https://www.axios.com/2026/10/21/walmart-amazon-agents-muse).
