Perceptually tuned AV1 and AVIF encoders now surpass JPEG XL across the lossy bitrate spectrum, negating its historical visual quality advantage while avoiding JXL's lack of directional prediction and heavy bitstream overhead. Additionally, sluggish decoding speeds and modular decoding DOS risks mean its modest lossless gains fail to justify shipping a complex new codec surface to web platforms.
