Tapo Library Adds TPAP Protocol Support
Tapo v0.11.1 adds TPAP support to its unofficial Rust client and Python wrapper, allowing compatible lights, plugs, power strips, hubs, and cameras to work with Third-Party Compatibility disabled. The update also expands camera-hub support and improves the companion MCP server. This is a meaningful security and reliability upgrade for local Tapo automation, turning a firmware-induced compatibility headache into automatic protocol negotiation.
- –Devices now select the appropriate protocol during direct connections and discovery without application-code changes.
- –TPAP’s SPAKE2+ authentication reduces offline password-guessing risk and protects previously captured sessions.
- –Incorrect credentials can trigger device lockouts, so clients must avoid retry loops.
- –Rust and Python stay feature-aligned, while tapo-mcp exposes the improved compatibility to AI agents.
- –Camera support remains model- and firmware-dependent, and some camera hubs still use AES SSL.
