Ecosia Drops Mistral, Picks Chinese Open Models
Berlin-based search engine Ecosia is replacing Mistral with open-weight models including Qwen, GLM, and Kimi through European AI platform Melious. CEO Christian Kroll says the switch roughly halved costs while improving quality and performance.
Ecosia’s move is a sharp warning that Europe’s AI sovereignty strategy may depend more on hosting open models than building frontier models from scratch.
- –Open-weight Chinese models are becoming credible production alternatives for European companies.
- –Cost and reliability can outweigh brand, geography, and model-origin considerations.
- –Melious gives Ecosia a model-agnostic routing layer with European infrastructure and failover.
- –Developers should evaluate model performance, latency, licensing, censorship, and data-governance tradeoffs together.
