Android Studio Opens Up to 40+ Agents
Google has made Bring Your Own Agent stable in Android Studio, supporting Claude Agent, Codex, Antigravity, and 40+ ACP-compatible agents with access to Android-aware tools. Android CLI also now offers official plugins for Claude Code and Codex, while AppFunctions remains a preview for exposing app actions to Gemini.
Google is positioning Android Studio as an agent-neutral control plane and Android CLI as its portable terminal layer—a stronger strategy than forcing developers into one assistant.
- –ACP support lets developers switch agents without abandoning project context, Compose previews, emulator control, Logcat, or build diagnostics.
- –Android CLI gives Claude Code and Codex structured access to project creation, devices, UI inspection, Journeys, Android skills, and official platform knowledge.
- –Compose preview rendering and real-device streaming address the biggest weakness of coding agents: they can generate Android code but struggle to validate visual and hardware behavior.
- –Developers already working in terminals or CI should start with Android CLI; Android Studio remains the better environment for visual debugging and performance workflows.
- –AppFunctions is strategically important but still experimental/private preview, so Gemini-driven app actions are not yet a production foundation.
