Apfel brings Apple Intelligence to CLI
Apfel is an open-source Swift CLI that exposes Apple’s on-device FoundationModels LLM through the terminal, an OpenAI-compatible HTTP server, and an interactive chat. It runs locally on Apple Silicon Macs with no API keys, cloud dependency, or model download.
// ANALYSIS
This is a sharp example of “the model is already on your machine” becoming a real developer workflow, not just a platform demo. The upside is obvious for privacy-first shell automation; the limits are just as real, especially the small context window and Apple Silicon/macOS Tahoe lock-in.
- –The biggest selling point is operational simplicity: one `brew install` turns Apple Intelligence into a terminal tool, which removes the usual local-LLM setup tax.
- –The OpenAI-compatible server mode is the most useful part for developers because it lets existing clients and scripts point at local inference with minimal changes.
- –Native MCP support makes it more interesting than a novelty wrapper; tool calling turns the Mac’s local model into something that can actually participate in workflows.
- –The tradeoff is constraint, not capability breadth: 4K context, fixed model, and Apple-only hardware mean this complements Ollama/LM Studio rather than replacing them.
- –For Apple, this is also a signal that FoundationModels can be more than an app-only API if the ecosystem starts building ergonomic CLIs and servers around it.
