ChatGPT File Library unlocks file reuse

OpenAI's March 23, 2026 File Library automatically saves uploaded or created files in ChatGPT, while generated images stay in the Images tab. It's rolling out on web only for Plus, Pro, and Business users outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK.

// ANALYSIS

This is the kind of unglamorous feature that changes behavior: ChatGPT stops feeling like a disposable thread and starts feeling like a persistent workspace. If you use it for specs, spreadsheets, or prompt assets, File Library removes the "which chat was that in?" tax. File Library automatically captures uploaded and created files, and recent files in the composer make it easier to pull the right asset back into a new chat. The rollout is still narrow: web only, and currently limited to Plus, Pro, and Business users outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. Deleting a chat does not delete files saved in Library, which is great for reuse but means users need a separate cleanup habit. Keeping generated images in Images while everything else lives in Library suggests OpenAI is splitting ChatGPT into dedicated content surfaces instead of one catch-all inbox.
