Japan builds 140MW Vera Rubin AI factory
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has partnered with NVIDIA and consortium Noetra Corp to build a 140-megawatt Vera Rubin AI factory under the FRONTia Project. The state-backed infrastructure will train open multimodal foundation models for physical AI and robotics, distributing weights directly to domestic developers.
Japan is bypassing standard data center models by building a dedicated, state-backed physical AI powerhouse that shifts the focus from SaaS chatbots to real-world industrial robotics. By distributing pretrained model weights directly to domestic developers, the nation is creating a blueprint for sovereign AI that ensures local industries remain competitive in the physical automation era.
* The 140MW facility will pack 13,750 NVIDIA Vera CPUs and 27,500 Rubin GPUs on the DSX reference platform with Spectrum-X Ethernet.
* Unlike Western AI clouds geared towards LLM search and developer APIs, this infrastructure specifically targets physical AI applications like robotics, digital twins, and manufacturing.
* Noetra Corp. brings together 44 companies including SoftBank, Sony, NEC, and Honda, uniting Japan's tech and automotive giants under a single national initiative.
