Claude Code Revives HP Laser 1008a
An open-source project uses Claude Code to assemble a native-feeling Apple Silicon macOS driver for the USB-only HP Laser 1008a. It combines CUPS, HP’s Linux SPL3 codec in a container, and a privileged USB daemon to enable ordinary Cmd-P printing.
This is a compelling example of AI-assisted systems engineering, though the breakthrough is careful integration and reverse engineering rather than Claude inventing a printer protocol.
- –Routes CUPS raster output through HP’s genuine `rastertospl` codec instead of unreliable generic PCL, PostScript, or SpliX drivers
- –Works around macOS USB permissions and CUPS sandbox restrictions with a root LaunchDaemon and libusb
- –Supports HP Laser 1003, 1006, and 1008 variants on Apple Silicon macOS
- –The installer is practical, but depends on Homebrew, Colima, Docker, and an always-on Linux VM
- –The project downloads HP binaries at install time and does not redistribute them, reducing licensing concerns
